The Ultimate Supermarket Mince Pie Showdown

The festive season wouldn’t be complete without the perfect mince pie. We picked up a variety of mince pies from different supermarkets, including budget stores like Aldi and Lidl, as well as luxury brands like Waitrose and Marks and Spencer. We compared them all to the beloved Mr Kipling mince pies to see which ones stood out in terms of flavor and value for money.

As expected, Mr Kipling’s mince pies were of high quality, with delicious short pastry and a well-balanced, fruity filling. However, their higher price point meant they lost some points in the value for money category.

Waitrose’s offering exuded luxury with larger pies and a buttery flavor, but its higher price put a dent in its score, despite its impressive taste.

Sainsbury’s, Lidl, and Morrisons all fell somewhere in the middle, with different strengths and weaknesses in terms of flavor, pastry, and price.

At the lower end of the spectrum were Asda and Aldi, with disappointing flavor and quality, despite their affordable prices.

Surprisingly, the clear winner of our taste test was Iceland, with well-filled, tangy, and delectable mince pies that stole the show both in terms of flavor and price.

Tesco also proved to be a strong contender with its well-balanced flavor and impressive value for money.

In conclusion, while Mr Kipling still sets a high bar, there are now supermarket options that have caught up both in taste and value for money. Iceland emerged as the surprising and clear winner of our mince pie showdown, with Tesco as a close runner-up.
