Midlands Met Office warns of snow days after first frost

The Midlands experienced temperatures as low as -2C overnight, with the Met Office warning of potential snow in the coming days as a result of the freezing conditions. The region, encompassing Birmingham, the Black Country, and Worcestershire, is expected to continue to face cold weather, with the mercury dipping below zero on Sunday morning.

Residents are bracing themselves for the cold spell as they grapple with increasing gas and electricity bills, trying to conserve heat by avoiding the use of heating appliances. Although areas like Pershore and Cannock recorded -2C this morning, the Met Office indicated that the wind made it feel more like -4C.

Saturday’s temperatures are anticipated to remain below 6C, with freezing conditions expected across the region on Sunday morning, reaching -2C before heavy rain ensues. The following week brings the potential for snow, according to the Met Office.

A Met Office forecaster for the Midlands stated, “Tonight, clear skies for most and light winds will allow temperatures to fall below freezing overnight, bringing frosty conditions for many. Cloud continuing to thicken from the west by dawn. Minimum temperature -2°C.”

Looking ahead to the period between November 29 and December 8, the forecast indicates overall colder than average conditions across the UK in the lead up to Christmas. The potential for widespread snow, accompanied by strong winds or gales, particularly in the southern regions exists during the initial part of this period. Northerly winds are likely, bringing a mix of cold, calm periods alongside occasional showery episodes featuring rain, sleet, and possibly hill snow. While any snow and sleet showers are expected to primarily impact northern and eastern coastal areas, the persistent cold may transition towards the end of the period, with rising temperatures and the introduction of cloud and rain from the Atlantic.

Bookmaker William Hill has presented betting odds for a white Christmas in Birmingham at 6/1, with shorter odds of 4/1 for Manchester.
