Irish Cream Liqueur Comparison: Baileys vs. Aldi, Morrisons, Marks & Spencer, Lidl

Baileys, the cherished Christmas tipple for many, faces competition from own-brand versions produced by various supermarkets. With prices being a focal point of the festive rivalry, I decided to conduct a comparative taste test to see if any could rival the much-loved Baileys Original Irish Cream.

Despite its usual retail price of £16.50, Baileys remains a firm favorite, boasting a smooth and velvety texture with a balanced infusion of whiskey, cream, chocolate, and vanilla flavors. However, its high price point means it loses some points in the competition.

In contrast, the lower-priced supermarket alternatives include Aldi’s Ballycastle, Lidl’s offering, Sainsbury’s own-brand, Morrisons' The Best range, Marks and Spencer, and Iceland’s Carthy’s Country Cream. These options come in at a significantly lower price range, from £4.99 to £13.

Following a meticulous tasting process, I found that while some alternatives came close, none could quite match the refined taste of Baileys. Marks and Spencer, however, emerged as the surprise winner, offering a creamy and delicious alternative that even surpassed the renowned Baileys.

In summary, despite the allure of significantly cheaper options at some supermarkets, it is crucial to consider both alcohol content and taste before making a purchase. While some alternatives may offer good value for money, Baileys remains the top choice for many, with Marks and Spencer’s version proving to be the closest contender.
