Four Shocking Midland Restaurant Closures of 2023

The year 2023 has seen a tough time for the hospitality industry in the West Midlands with the unexpected closures of much-loved restaurants and breweries. Pensons, a Michelin guide restaurant in Worcestershire, and Vinoteca in Birmingham city centre are among those that have sadly shut their doors for good.

In Worcestershire, the closure of the Michelin-starred Pensons has left diners saddened. The restaurant, previously named among the best in the UK, had won the prestigious Gold Taste of England prize at the Visit England Awards for Excellence 2023. Despite glowing reviews and accolades, the restaurant cited persistent inflation and interest rate pressures as the reasons for its closure.

Vinoteca, a prominent bar and restaurant in Birmingham, closed less than a year after its grand opening due to trading conditions during and post-pandemic, including energy costs and train strikes. The closure comes as a surprise as the chain has five successful restaurants in London.

In Harborne, the Bun and Barrel received excellent reviews for its burgers before announcing its sudden closure. The management team’s setback due to illness was the reason behind the closure, leaving behind a near-perfect rating on Google reviews.

Digbeth bid farewell to The Karczma, a beloved Polish restaurant that closed after serving the community for over a decade. The difficult decision to shut down was influenced by various factors, including Brexit, the HS2 station construction, the Covid-19 pandemic, inflation, and rising operational costs.

These closures have left a void in the hearts of diners across the region, showing the challenges faced by the hospitality industry in the current economic climate.
