Baileys vs Supermarket Irish Cream: The Ultimate Taste Test

During the festive season, Baileys Irish Cream is a popular choice for many, whether enjoyed on its own with ice or as an indulgent addition to hot chocolate. With supermarkets offering their own versions, I set out to compare and rank these Irish cream liqueurs to find out which one reigns supreme.

At discounted prices, a 70cl Baileys bottle ranges from £10 at Asda to £12 at Morrisons, though the regular retail price is £16.50. Meanwhile, supermarket alternatives start at £4.99 in Aldi and Lidl for the same size, with prices reaching up to £13 at Morrisons.

In the taste test, Baileys proved to be a fine-tasting, smooth, and velvety option, earning a 4/5 rating despite its higher price. Aldi’s offering, priced at £4.99, impressed with its attractive packaging and decent taste, earning the same rating. However, Iceland’s Carthy’s Country Cream, priced at £8.75, fell short with a rating of 1/5 due to its unappealing taste.

Lidl’s version matched Aldi’s price and alcohol content but received a 3/5 rating for its slightly unpleasant aftertaste. Sainsbury’s, at £12.50 (or £9 with a Nectar card), garnered a 2/5 score for its lackluster blend and harsh whiskey taste.

Morrison’s larger 1L bottle at £13, which equates to £9.10 for 70cl, scored a 3/5 for its creamy texture, despite being slightly more expensive. Marks & Spencer’s option, priced at £10, emerged as the winner, earning a rating of 4.5/5 for its almost identical taste to Baileys, making it a top contender.

In conclusion, despite competitive pricing, most supermarket alternatives fell short in taste compared to Baileys. However, Marks & Spencer’s version stood out as a delightful and superior option, offering a creamy and delicious alternative for the festive season.
